When to Use a Strap Corner Protector

Edge protection is required by FMCSA section 393.104 “whenever a tiedown would be subject to abrasion or cutting at the point where it touches an article of cargo.”

This doesn’t mean you only need protection when your cargo is sharp – even loads like lumber and shingles can cause strap damage. When you pull a tie down across your cargo at a sharp angle, then add tension, that puts a lot of stress on the tie down’s fabric. A corner protector provides a more rounded angle to better distribute the stress and a non-abrasive surface.
